What is the E33G digital nomad KITAS?
The E33G is Indonesia's remote worker KITAS - the permit widely known as the digital nomad visa. It allows you to live in Indonesia for up to one year while earning your income from companies and clients based outside Indonesia.
It is a genuine limited-stay permit (KITAS), not a visit visa. That distinction matters: instead of cycling through tourist visas and extensions, you get a stable legal basis to actually settle in Bali - sign a longer lease, open a local bank account, and stop counting days.
Indonesia introduced it to formally welcome the remote workers who were already living in Bali on back-to-back visit visas.
Who qualifies for the E33G?
The E33G is designed for people who:
- Work remotely for employers or clients outside Indonesia - freelancers, contractors, remote employees, online business owners
- Can show proof of remote income and an ongoing working relationship
- Hold a passport valid well beyond the intended permit period
- Have health insurance valid in Indonesia
- Are not taking paid work from an Indonesian company
The critical test is where your income comes from. If you're paid by an overseas company for work delivered remotely, the E33G fits. If an Indonesian company pays you, you need a Working KITAS (E23) instead.
E33G requirements in detail
Passport
Valid for at least 18 months at the time of application for a one-year permit. Requirements are stricter than for tourist visas - check your expiry date early.
Proof of remote income
The core of the application. Typically one or more of:
- Employment contract with an overseas company stating remote work
- Client contracts or service agreements for freelancers
- Bank statements showing regular income deposits
- Evidence your income originates outside Indonesia
Indonesia sets a minimum annual income threshold for this permit. Because thresholds and documentary standards are periodically revised, we confirm the current figure and exactly which documents will satisfy immigration before you pay - ask us for the current requirement.
Health insurance
Valid coverage for your stay in Indonesia.
Passport photograph
Recent colour photo, plain background, face clearly visible.
Proof of accommodation
Where you'll be living in Indonesia - a lease or booking is usually sufficient.
What the E33G lets you do
- Live in Indonesia for up to a year without repeated visa runs
- Work remotely for overseas clients and employers
- Sign longer-term leases - villa owners take a KITAS far more seriously than a tourist stamp
- Open an Indonesian bank account (subject to the bank's own requirements)
- Obtain a local KITAS card and registration, which simplifies day-to-day admin
What it does not allow
- Employment by an Indonesian company - that requires a Working KITAS (E23)
- Selling directly into the Indonesian market as a local business - that needs a PMA company and an Investor KITAS
- Automatic permanent residency - long-term residency runs through KITAP after qualifying periods
How to apply for the E33G
- Talk to our team first. Remote-income documentation is where these applications succeed or fail. We review your setup - employment vs freelance, where you're paid, what evidence you hold - before anything is lodged.
- Prepare your documents. Passport, proof of remote income, insurance, photograph, accommodation.
- We prepare and submit the application to Indonesian immigration.
- Approval and KITAS issuance, then in-country registration steps where required.
Because E33G files are document-heavy and requirements shift, we handle these as a guided process rather than a pure self-serve form - a licensed agent works your file directly.
E33G vs B211A vs other KITAS options
| B211A | E33G Digital Nomad | Investor KITAS (E28A) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max stay | 180 days | 1 year | 2 years |
| Type | Visit visa | Limited-stay permit | Limited-stay permit |
| Remote work (overseas income) | Tolerated | Explicitly permitted | Permitted |
| Work for Indonesian company | No | No | Via your own PMA |
| Local bank account | Difficult | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Testing Bali out | Living in Bali long-term | Investing / running a company |
Most nomads follow a natural path: start on a B211A for up to six months, decide Bali is home, then move to the E33G for a full year of stability. If you're also investing in or running an Indonesian business, look at the Investor KITAS instead.

Taxes - read this before you apply
Living in Indonesia long-term has tax implications. Broadly, spending more than 183 days in Indonesia within a 12-month period can make you an Indonesian tax resident, which may create local filing obligations - and your home country may have its own rules and a double-taxation treaty with Indonesia.
We are visa and legal-services specialists, not tax advisers. Before committing to a year in Indonesia, get advice from a qualified tax professional in both your home country and Indonesia. We can point you to the right questions to ask.
Common reasons E33G applications fail
- Weak proof of remote income - no contract, irregular deposits, or income that appears Indonesian-sourced
- Income below the current threshold
- Insufficient passport validity
- Missing health insurance
- Applying as if it were a tourist visa - the E33G is a residence permit and the documentary standard is much higher
This is precisely why we review your situation before lodging.

Questions about the Digital Nomad Visa
Do I pay Indonesian tax?
Income earned from outside Indonesia on the E33G is generally not taxed locally. We'll connect you with a tax consultant for your specific situation.
Can my family join me?
Yes - dependents can apply for a family KITAS linked to yours. We can bundle the applications together.
What is the Indonesia digital nomad visa?
The E33G KITAS is Indonesia's remote worker permit. It lets you live in Indonesia for up to a year while earning income from companies and clients based outside Indonesia - a genuine residence permit, not a tourist visa.
Who qualifies for the E33G digital nomad KITAS?
Remote workers, freelancers, contractors and online business owners paid by overseas clients or employers, who can evidence that income, hold valid health insurance and have a passport valid well beyond the permit period.
Can I work for an Indonesian company on the E33G?
No. The E33G covers remote work for overseas clients and employers only. Taking paid employment from an Indonesian company requires a work permit, and running a local business requires an Investor KITAS and a PMA company.
How much does the digital nomad KITAS cost?
Current pricing is shown on this page in AUD, converted to your local currency at checkout. Because document requirements are detailed, we assess your situation before you pay and refund in full if we can't proceed.
What is the minimum income for the E33G?
Indonesia sets a minimum annual income threshold, and it's revised periodically. Rather than quote a figure that may be out of date, we confirm the current requirement and the exact evidence needed for your situation - just ask.
How long is the digital nomad KITAS valid?
Up to 12 months, with renewal options depending on your circumstances. That's substantially longer than the 180 days a B211A visit visa allows.
What documents do I need for the E33G?
Passport valid at least 18 months, proof of remote income (employment or client contracts plus bank statements), health insurance valid in Indonesia, a passport photograph, and proof of accommodation.
Do I have to pay tax in Indonesia as a digital nomad?
Spending more than 183 days in Indonesia in a 12-month period generally makes you an Indonesian tax resident, which may create filing obligations. We are not tax advisers - get qualified advice in both your home country and Indonesia.
E33G or B211A - which should I get?
Staying under six months, or just testing Bali out? The B211A is simpler and cheaper. Planning to be based in Bali for a year with a lease and a bank account? The E33G is the right permit.
Can I open a bank account on a digital nomad KITAS?
Yes, a KITAS makes opening an Indonesian bank account possible, subject to each bank's own requirements. It also makes landlords far more comfortable with long-term leases.
