What is the Indonesia e-VOA?
The e-VOA (electronic Visa on Arrival) is Indonesia's most popular short-stay tourist visa and the simplest legal way into Bali for a holiday. It grants a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days, counted from the day you land.
Its key advantage over the free visa exemption is flexibility: the e-VOA can be extended once for a further 30 days without leaving Indonesia, giving you up to 60 days in total. The visa exemption cannot be extended at all.
Because it is issued electronically before you fly, you receive it by email as a PDF and walk straight to the immigration counter on arrival instead of queuing to pay at the airport.
Who is eligible for the Bali e-VOA?
97 nationalities qualify for the e-VOA, including:
- Australia, New Zealand
- United Kingdom, Ireland, and all EU member states
- United States, Canada
- India, China, Japan, South Korea
- Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines
- UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar
- Brazil, Argentina, South Africa
You must also be travelling for an eligible purpose: tourism, visiting family or friends, transit, or short non-employment business activities such as meetings, conferences and site visits.
If your nationality is not on the e-VOA list, the B211A Single Entry Visit Visa is available to a broader range of passports and is usually the right alternative.
e-VOA requirements in detail
Passport validity - the 6-month rule
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in Indonesia, not from your date of application or departure. This is the single most common reason applications are delayed, so check the expiry date before you start.
You also need at least one blank page for the arrival stamp.
Proof of onward travel
Indonesian immigration requires evidence that you intend to leave. A return or onward flight ticket departing within your permitted stay satisfies this. If you have not booked a return leg yet, a confirmed onward ticket to any third country works.
Passport bio page
You'll upload a photo or scan of your passport bio page - the one with your photograph and machine-readable code. Our scanner reads your details automatically, so you don't have to type them in. Make sure all four corners are visible, the image is in focus, and there is no glare across the text.
Funds and accommodation
You should be able to show sufficient funds for your stay and know where you'll be staying. In practice this is rarely checked for short tourist visits, but immigration officers may ask on arrival.
How to apply for the e-VOA online
- Check your eligibility. Enter your nationality and we confirm within seconds whether the e-VOA is right for your trip.
- Upload your passport bio page. Our scanner extracts your name, passport number, date of birth and expiry automatically. You review and confirm.
- Add your travel details. Arrival date and where you'll be staying in Bali.
- Pay securely. One card payment via Stripe, quoted in AUD and converted to your local currency at the live rate.
- A licensed agent reviews your file. Within one business hour. If anything is missing or unclear, we message you on WhatsApp before lodging - we only submit to immigration once your file is complete.
- Receive your e-VOA by email, typically in 1-3 business days. Save a copy to your phone and print one for the border.

Processing time - and when to apply
Most e-VOA applications are approved in 1-3 business days. We recommend applying at least one week before you fly to absorb Indonesian public holidays, weekends, and any document follow-ups.
If you are travelling sooner, our Express option puts your file in the priority queue - you can select it during checkout.
What happens when you arrive in Bali
- Have your e-VOA PDF ready - on your phone or printed.
- Complete the electronic customs declaration (e-CD) before or on arrival. This is separate from your visa and free.
- Proceed to the e-VOA / Visa on Arrival lane at Ngurah Rai (Denpasar) airport immigration - you skip the payment counter.
- Your passport is stamped with your 30-day permitted stay. Check the date written on the stamp before you leave the counter; that date, not your arrival date, governs when you must leave or extend.
Extending your e-VOA in Bali
The e-VOA can be extended once, for an additional 30 days.
- Start the extension 7-10 days before your current stay expires.
- The process traditionally requires attending an immigration office in person for a photo and fingerprints.
- We handle it for you: we collect your passport from your hotel or villa, manage the immigration appointment, and return your passport with the new validity.
See Visa Extension for details and current pricing.
e-VOA vs Visa Exemption vs B211A
| Visa Exemption | e-VOA | B211A | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Paid | Paid |
| Initial stay | 30 days | 30 days | 60 days |
| Extendable? | No | Once (+30) | Twice (to 180) |
| Max stay | 30 days | 60 days | 180 days |
| Sponsor needed | No | No | Yes (we include it) |
Rule of thumb: if there is any chance you'll want to stay beyond 30 days, choose the e-VOA over the exemption - an exemption cannot be converted or extended once you're in the country. If you already know you'll stay longer than 60 days, start with the B211A.
Overstaying - fines and consequences
Indonesia charges a daily fine for every day you overstay your permitted stay. Longer overstays can lead to detention, deportation and a re-entry ban.
Avoiding it is simple: note the exact expiry date on your arrival stamp, and begin your extension at least a week before. If you are unsure how many days you have left, message our team and we'll check for you.
Common reasons e-VOA applications are delayed
- Passport expiring within 6 months of arrival
- Blurred or cropped passport photo - corners cut off, glare, or low resolution
- Name mismatch between the application and the passport (middle names, hyphens)
- No onward ticket on file
- Applying too late - submitting 1-2 days before departure leaves no margin
Every application we handle is reviewed by a licensed Bali-based agent before lodging, which is how we catch these before immigration does.

Questions about the Visa on Arrival
Can I extend my e-VOA?
Yes - once, for an extra 30 days. We can handle the extension for you from inside Bali without you visiting an immigration office.
Do I still queue at the airport?
No. With an e-VOA approved in advance you go straight to the immigration counter - no payment desk, no cash needed.
What if I overstay?
Indonesia charges a daily overstay fine. We'll remind you before your visa expires and can arrange an extension in time.
How long can I stay in Bali on an e-VOA?
Up to 30 days from the day you arrive. The e-VOA can be extended once for a further 30 days, giving you a maximum of 60 days in Indonesia without leaving the country.
How much does the Bali Visa on Arrival cost?
Current pricing is shown on this page in AUD and converted to your local currency at checkout. There are no hidden fees - the price covers the government fee and our handling, and you're refunded in full if we can't proceed.
How long does e-VOA processing take?
Most e-VOA applications are approved within 1-3 business days. We recommend applying at least a week before you fly to allow for weekends, Indonesian public holidays and any document follow-ups.
What documents do I need for the e-VOA?
A passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date with a blank page, a clear photo of your passport bio page, a return or onward flight ticket, and an email address to receive your visa.
Which nationalities are eligible for the e-VOA?
97 nationalities qualify, including Australia, the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, all EU countries, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the UAE. If yours isn't eligible, the B211A visit visa is the alternative.
Can I extend my e-VOA once I'm in Bali?
Yes, once, for an additional 30 days. Start the extension 7-10 days before your current stay expires. We collect your passport from your hotel or villa and handle the immigration appointment for you.
Is the e-VOA single or multiple entry?
Single entry. If you leave Indonesia the visa is used up, and you'll need a new one to return. If you plan several trips, look at a Multiple Entry Visa instead.
What's the difference between the e-VOA and free visa exemption?
Some nationalities can enter free for 30 days, but that exemption cannot be extended. The e-VOA costs more but can be extended once for another 30 days - the safer choice if your plans might change.
What happens if I overstay my Bali visa?
Indonesia charges a fine for every day you overstay, and long overstays can lead to detention, deportation and re-entry bans. Check the date on your arrival stamp and start your extension at least a week early.
Do I need a return ticket to get an e-VOA?
Yes. Indonesian immigration requires proof of onward travel. A return flight or an onward ticket to any third country within your permitted stay satisfies this requirement.
